Talking about feminism, Mary Astell was the first feminist writer. She wrote the book “A serious proposal to the ladies”, it has been one of her famous works. In this, she proposes an educational equality among women and men because both have the same right and the need to be educated.
The Great Fire of 1666 swept with the vast majority of central parts of London. It consumed thousand of houses and buildings. Furthermore, it destroyed completely the life of the habitants of the English city. As a result, the social and economic problems created by the disaster were crushing. Definitely, the London Fire affected Londoners’ life economically, socially, psychologically, etc. However, it is surprising to know that after this disaster London came alive. Londoners overcame all the problems.
John Locke was an idealogue for a revolutionary movement. In his greatest work the Essay Concerning Human Understanding the goal that Locke pretended to achieve was determine the limits of human understanding. In this work, he proposed new ideals such as empiricism and liberalism. Locke repudiated the doctrine of innatism. He thought that we are born without innate ideas, and that knowledge is determined only by experience. Without any doubt he respected empirical science as the book says.
I have found some information about how the fire started, and it was supposed to came from a bakery. I think the fire lasted four days, and a common way to stop fires was to demolish houses to create firebreaks. It says that one good thing that came from the Great Fire was the diminish of the plague which died among the dirty rats.
London was destroyed by a devastating fire that took place in 1666; this fire lasted three days. It is said that it began in a bakery and it spread rapidly through the city, destroying thousands of houses and a Cathedral named St. Paul. This disaster left serious economic and social problems in that city.
The great fire was a devastating event that lasted 4 days and almost destroyed the entire city of London. There is an hypothesis which blames the Catholic church of started the fire.
Yes. The fire destroyed lots of buildings and as a result the country faced a difficult economic situation. In this period of time, written works were mostly about religion. Some writers like John Milton were banned and forced to keep their works secret. I think the feminism of this age refers to "Romance", one of the most succesful types of writing. Novels were more popular among women. About Locke, I found information which says that he was famous for his philosophical works. He wrote about human understanding in different aspects and environments like, politics.
John Locke was a philosopher (In my particular opinion one of the best)that influenced a lot of society fields, such as, politics, religion and so on.
To go deep into those fields, the influence of Locke in politics (Lock states that the sovereign comes form th people; happiness, freedom had been stated before a establish society)that can be perceived in the USA constitution.
In religion, Locke states that religion is something personal individual, that states the relation with God in an individual way, not as a group.
The works and ideas of John Locke influenced to David Hume another important philosopher and economist of Europe. Hume states that the human knowledge become form the senses.
To talk about feminism we have to start talking about Mary Wollstonecraft and his famous work: A Vindication of the Rights of Woman: with Strictures on Political and Moral Subjects (1792). It is consider the first work in which was mentioned the position of woman in the society.
Mary states in that book that men and women are equal in the some of areas in life.
The feminist movement began with Mary Wollstonecraft
Talking about feminism, Mary Astell was a feminist writer. Her book “A serious proposal to the ladies” proposes an equal education among women and men. According to her book, women deserve to be educated with the same opportunities as men.
According to John Locke, every individual has cognitive capacities although these are strictly limited. Locke pointed out that as human beings we have a responsibility which is to exercise our cognitive capacities by judging what to believe or not, rather than trusting completely and blindly on an authority or tradition. In the opinion of Locke, any person has the right to impose their religious beliefs upon others.
The Great Fire was a trasendental time that changed the face of London forever. By this time most of the london houses were made of wood and that helped to the fire to expand quickly. Although the loss of human was minimal, the property loss was outsize: hundred of houses, buildings and churches dissapered. This created a dificult economic situation. In memory, the king ordered to design a monument to the great fire, which is still stands just exactly in the site of the bakery, in which the fire started.
"A Serious Proposal to the Ladies" was one of the most emblematic works of Mary Astell, the first feminist writer of English. She worked for establishing equal rigths and protection for women and besides, she was deeply convinced that legitimacy and cultural development were the successful keys to certify the women's rigth and to give them a formal position in society.
Even though John Locke didn't write many books, his ideas influenced other philosophers' future work. He had problems because of his texts. He even had to leave England and go to Holland to be safe and out of the government's reach. He went back to his country in 1688.
In 1666, London suffered a big problem that was a fire which destroyed the city. This fire that was called the Great Fire of London, started with a small fire on pudding line. All the houses disappeared, because they were made with wood and pitch construction, that made the fire went easy to destroyed whole London.
Well Ideals and Feminism. All movements that work to overturn gender inequality and obtain women's rights should be considered feminist movements, even when they did not or do not apply the term to themselves. Part of the rationale of 19th century feminists was not only a reaction to the injustices they saw but the increasingly suffocating Victorian image of the proper role of women and their "sphere".
The great fire of London destroyed the Mediaval London city. At that timre,Houses were made of pitch and wood construction, it means that it was dangerously flamable, that's why it did not take too much time for the fire to expand in the city, and it is said that the strong wind of that night contribute to fire the city. after that incident the city was redisign by the order of Charles II
Mary Astell was one of the first English feminist writer, Her advocacy of equal education opportunities for woman were the statements displayed in her work ("A Serious Proposal to the Ladies, for the Advancement of Their True and Greatest Interest (1694) and A Serious Proposal, Part II ").Astell suggests extending women's career options beyond mother and nun.what she means is that woman has to have same opportunities as men, education and an enviroment were women feel protected.
Jhon locke was a philosopher consither the "father of liberaliam". His work had a great impact in others philosophers. Jhon locke's "theory of mind" was one the most important works of jhon.
jonh Locke was a great studious of the 18 century. Locke studied medicine in Oxford. Besides, he was a theologian and an economist. Lock became renowned because of his philosophic writings. He defended the separation of powers in an equal way. John Locke inspired the Anglo-saxon liberalism, clearly reflected in the constitutions of Great Britain and the U.S.A.
Now, about "A Serious Proposal to the Ladies" I believe it was a great advance for women's rights. Since, for a long period women had not been taken as an important part of society. Such behavior ,which I believe was adopted from the catholic church, has been in every society for a long time and still persists.
London's great fire occured Sunday, 2 September to Wednesday, 5 September. It destroyes the majority of the city affecting the economy of the city and country since London was the most important city of Britain. It started at a bakery and spread through the city. It was the seconf calamity to strike London in a space of 12 months, it happened right after the city was struke by the black plague. The fire extended and caused a lot of smaged mainly because the city mayor did not give it the importance it deserved. When he realized the seriusness of the fire it was already too late.
Jhon locke is most commonly known as the father of modern liberalism, was a physician and philosopher whose idea of empirism and liberty influenced the writings of many authors as well as the writting of USA act of independance. Much Locke's work is characterized by opposition to authoritarianism.
Was considered the first feminist because of her work in favor of women's education. Her main goal when writing books was to provide women an oportunity to get religious and secular education, that way they could have an equal share of opportunities in a world controlled by men.
Astell considered descartes'theory of dualism. She believed that if all Men are born free, how is it that all Women are born Slaves? Astell had a feminist behavior since her father died when she was 12 years old. Since she grew up on her own, she adopted a feminist personality.
Astell believied in Descartes' theory of dualism, and explained that, If all Men are born free, how is it that all Women are born Slaves? Mary's father died when she was 12 years old. With nobody else to take care of her, then she had to survive by herself and obviously she became feminist after all.
Something interesting about John Locke was the fact that he never considered himself a smart person or a "genius", even when he did many important things (taking into consideration that he is the father of the liberalism). Although he was very criticized by other writers, later he was a standard with his famous ideals and thougths and those people had to resume this ideas and acknowledge his work.
The great fire of London happened in 1666 in the baker’s shop of Thomas Farriner just 12 months later of the great plague. One of the main issues that provoked the spread out of the fire was that the most of the London´s buildings of that time were made of wood, so many people died burn.
Now about the ideals in the 17th century was a "Scientific Revolution", so most of the people changed their way to perceive the reality; in other words in this time the scientific researches started to gain importance. It was born a critic way to think and analize the situations.
About feminism the first feminist document was Mary Wollstonecraft's Vindication of the Rights of Women in 1792. In the French Revolution, women's republican clubs demanded that liberty, equality, and fraternity be applied regardless of sex, but this movement was extinguished for the time by the Code Napoléon.
The great fire of London in 1666 began as a small fire in a pudding lane an lasted three days. This fire destroid the 80% of the city proper including 13,000 houses and 89 churches. The good thing aout this fire is that few people died and the city was redesign.
Well with respect about the women writers i can mention to Jane Austen, Agatha Christie and Anne Rice. I know that these last ones are a little more conteporaries but for me are great and inventiveness women.
After read a day in Londong I think that it was a good city to live in that period because it had a lot of oppotunities to develope like person and also combine the work with the plesure like arts and music. This city offered many place where the londeners could find what they wanted despit the big fire, and the writer John Dryden knew how to get adventage of the situations that were hapening at that moment through his works.
I would say that the great fire in london was a bennefit for them, because when they rebuilded the city new oportunities became available, people socialized more and london became a city of great oportunities. (samuel)
on the other hand locke left a big mark because he wasn't just "another average joe" he was a different type of philosopher because he always was in fashion, and when I say in fashion I say that he was always aware of what was happening around him. samuel
It is really sad how we the men can be that elitist with ourselves, women writters had a hard time in the past to make themselves noticed, sexual differences are only imaginary barriers that hold us to have a better social life, I love agatha christie and I have good times reading about claudia lars, women has the same rights as us and that is something that must be in our minds always. "samuel"
London great fire, was the end of the london great plague, it seems that it was planned by someone, could be the king because there were few victims, and the king Charles II leaded the operation against the fire. Roselena
