2. Volpone. What do we know? Mosca, everything happens in one day. Then there is a mention of 3 years... what?
About "Volpone" in italian and "the big fox" in english (1606) , it is a comedy by Ben Johnson that include elements of balck comedy, animal fable and so on.
That comedy is about volopone that is pretending dying but he is not, he is doing that in order to dupe Voltore, Corbaccio and Corvino (These three wants his fortune. Voltore, Corbaccio and Corvino give extravagants gifts to volpone in order to be include in his heri. Mosca (volpone`s assistance) dupe Voltore, Corbaccio and Corvino, make them believe that they has been include in volpone`s heri.
Well… This guy could probably be John Donne, an English Jacobean poet that was the most important during the time of the queen Elizabeth I. Among his works include: religious poems, sonnets, love poetry and so forth… his works got attention because he wrote with a sensual and realistic style.
First of all, Volpone is a play written by Ben Johnson during the seventeenth century. It is about an avaricious and lustful man named Volpone, who is the protagonist, for him the only god that exists is his money, that´s why he pretends to be very sick in order to deceive three men, who try to be chosen as the future heir of Volpone´s fortune, and get different kind of gifts. During three years Volpone was attracting the interest of these guys, who brought him even the most extravagant gifts to please him and inherit his fortune. Volpone has a servant that is named mosca, he helps him to carry out his wicked plans. All the events that occurred in this play took place in one day.
after that a lot of things happens, such as,volpone tryeing to rape celia, corvino´s wife, volpone disguising as an officer in order to announced that he has died and telling to the others that he leave all his heri to mosca. But voltore, corbacio and corvino was angry because of that, and they return to court, but the officer reveals that he is volpone. At the end, Voltore, Corbaccio and Corvino were punished.
Trying to answer why mosca said that everything happen in 24 hours can be because the classical unities, that were rules, in that case will be "The unity of time" that consist in that the play should take action in no more than 24 hours.
About the 3 years, that is time in which Voltore, Corbaccio and Corvino had been interesting in volpone heri. But as I saiad before during that time the plays should take action in no more that 24 hours, the those 3 years are presented as an "antecedente" and everything that happend after it, is the play (volpone duping Voltore, Corbaccio and Corvino, volpone trying to rape celia, volpone disguising as an officer and decalring himself as death, and all the other adventures)
Volpone is a 17th century play by Ben Johnson and because of that folows the "Classical unities" that consist in 3 rules, Volpone follows one of the three rules, which is, The unity of time:that consist in that the play should take action in 24 hours, no more. The 3 years that are mentioned in the play are (the time in which Voltore, Corbaccio and Corvino had been interesting in volpone heri) and are presented as an "antecendente." What comes after be mentioned that (all the adventures of deeds of Volpone)it is the play "en si", that take action during 24 hours.
Jhon Donne was a famous english poet who is clearly recognized for writing love potry, religious, sonnets, etc. Something that marked a difference between his presecessors was the fact that, he used to combine the use of an object with an idea, those elements gave origin to a Methapor. His language was complicated and, in his poems he used to be kind of ironic when he reffered about love.
Volpone is a play of Ben Jhonson, in which is represented a merciless satire. In this plays appears unusual topics like greed and manipulation. Everything happen is one single day, then, it mentions 3 years after. Volpone is a wealthy man who pretends being ill just to get presents from three men who aspire to become in valpones's heir. Mosca is the name of his loyal servant, who helps to v0lpone to make up the plan, but after all, m0sca pretends to get a part of the fortune, that's way she is consigned t0 be slave and volpone g0es to pris0n.
Well, John Donne was an English Jacobean poet, preacher and an important representative figure of the metaphysical poets, who shared an interest for philosofy and metaphors. An interesting fact about this, is that metaphysical poets were not affiliated, indeed they did not knew each other. One of the things that called my attention is that, when John was born, Catholicism was illegal in England, I didn't know that.
John Donne, one of the major poets of the early 17th century. He was considered a master of the metaphysical conceit. His works have been outstanding due to their realistic and sensual style. He did his work through the use of conceits, wit and intellect. Definitely, he was an extended metaphor because he was able to combine two enormous different ideas into a single one.
wow! Donne had 12 kids!!!(the man in the picture) John Donne wrote several poems (at least 40) about variuos topics (love, faith, chatolic church, etc...)and he is considered the most important writer of the 17th century. Despite the fact of having influences and friendships with some important men (like his father in-law), Jonh Donne was poor. He wrote some controversial topics about chatolic church but I found that he was born in a chatolic family. He died on March 31, 1631.
Volpone is the protagonist in the play, his name means Fox in Italian, and I think that he deserved been called in that way, because he was always trying to get some money out every deal he had. Volpone was a rat, even though, I like the personality of the character, that is not very commom.
I found that the book of Leviathan was written by Thomas Hobbes in 1651. The book is divided in four parts: the first part is dedicated to men, the second part to commonwealth, the third part to the christian commonwelth, and the last part to the kingdom of darkness. The books is kind of phylosophical and political. Hobbes studied the man in order to define him in the social context.
Volpone or The Foxe is a play by Ben Jonson. It appeared in 1607 and the main topics are the greed and lust of London in that period of time (it was like a satire.)
Mosca is Volpone's servant. According to the description of his character, Mosca was like a parasite because he exists for Volpone and trough Volpone. Mosca takes advantage of the confidence between him and Volpone in order to get Volpone's wealth. He is more ambicious than his master.
Everything happens in one day. this is related to the unities of classical drama. One of the rules of classical drama claims that all happenings (actions) in the play must represent the passage of no more than one day. And the three years refer to the previous events in the play that lead up to the present situation,(the time Volpone spent attracting the legacy hunters)which must be recounted on the stage.
Volpone is a comedy written by Ben Johnson in the seventeenth-century. It’s concerning a caustic satire about the greed and lust. The protagonist of the comedy is Volpone. He is lustful, lecherous, and greedy for pleasure and for money. He has not a family; Mosca (servant) is his only true confidante. In this play, he feigns to be sick in order to get gifts from three hunters. At the end, Volpone spreads a rumor that he has died and as a result, Mosca legally owns Volpone's property. But this disappoints Volpone and he decides to reveal the truth. Finally, Volpone is sent to prison, while Mosca is consigned to a slave galley. It is very interesting to know that all the events in the comedy took place in one day. What a great play!
Hey! Gerson, very interesting information! I didn't know there was a rule of classical drama. Now I understand why everything happened in one day. I asked myself why in the play mentions three year if it is suppose that the events happened in one day. Now I got it.
Professor. Can you explain me a little bit more about the essay for the next Saturday? The poem or tale could be a modern one or it must be from what century? Can you give me an example or an idea of the analisys that you want?
After reading the sample essays, write an ESSAY on a poem, prose, sonnet, tale, or essay that has NOT been studied in this course and make and interpretative analysis of 2 pages. Students are expected to maintain a high level of integrity. Those who copy/paste from others will receive a grade of ZERO. No excuses. No tolerance.
Volpone, by Ben Johnson is a work about a man whose only desire was to get more and more money. He did everything he could to get it from other people. He took advantage of others without caring about negative results.
Yeah. I think my classmates are right. There was a rule for the time unity. Ben Johnson had a lot of work putting all those events in the time of a day.
The man in the photo is John Donne a metaphisical poet.
On the other hand what I know about Volpone is that is was a play written by Ben Jonson, Volpone is a reich men, who didn't have children to inherit, Volpone always wanted more money, Mosca was his servant, and the one who manipulates the wealth hunters Voltare(the lawyer), Corvino and Corbaccio, telling each one he was Volpone's favorite heir, but at the end Volpone became a victim of his servant, because Mosca pretended Volpone had left him the money, but he hadn't. At the end the money hunters including Mosca were taking to trial. It left a moral learning to its audience.
2. Volpone was a comedy written by Ben Johnson in 1606;also, Valpone is one of the characters. Mosca is another character, actually he is Volpone´s servant.
Moreover, the comedy takes place in Venice, over the course of one day;about the 3 days that was the time that Volpone has been attracting the interest of Voltore; Corbaccio; and Corvino who were three legacy hunters.
Who is this guy? he is John Donne (1572- 1531). who was one of the most important english methaphysical poet in the Elizabeth, James and Charles’ time.
Also, John Donne was considered as a master of the "concept" in the Golden Age, which combines an object and an idea forming a metaphor. His work includes: love poetry, religious, translations, epigrams, elegies in the tradition of imitation of Ovid's Amores songs and sermons in prose. despite his great education and poetics talents, he lived in poverty.
The guy in the picture is John Donne, he is considered the most outstanding of the english metaphisial poets. He was an churchman too, he was very famouse for his sermons. something curious about him is that few weeks before he died he wrote "Death's Duel" (his own funeral sermon.) It is said that he was obsessed with the idea of death.
Volpone is a play by Ben Jonson. Volpone is an italian word that means "The big fox" it is a comedy about an elderly benetician miser. He pretends to be dying, with help of his servant Mosca, he convince his greedy friends to give him presents in order to inherit the old man's fortune. At the end all his fraud gives huge results.
3 years is the time that Volpone has been atracting the interest of 3 people: Voltore ( a lawyer), Corvaccio( an old gentleman) and Corvino(a merchant) all of the are interesten in inherit the old man's fortune.
Leviathan was written by Thomas Hobbes is a book where Hobbes say thst heaven and hell is here on earth and denied the existence of incorporeal entities. some scholars say that Hobbes was atheist and others say that there is not suficient evidences to say that, what can't be denied is that Leviathan has very radical religious points of view.
Well, Thomas Hobbes implies in Leviathan, a contract theory of governmant. And it refers to people giving up to a goverment to recieve social order by means of a rule of law. This contract theory was the pillar on history about the notion that the state authority must derive or must be aproved by the ones who are being governed.
Yes. As Gerson says, Tommas Hobbes' work involved information about politics. Moreover, about human rights and religion. He focused special attention on these areas because he was an English political philosopher.

Volpone (Italian for "The Big Fox") is a comedy by Ben Jonson first produced in 1606, drawing on elements of city comedy, black comedy and animal fable. A merciless satire of greed and lust, it remains Jonson's most-performed play, and it is among the finest Jacobean comedies. I read the summary of this commedy and I think that it is interesting how Volpone is a cunning person and it is for that in Italian is called "The big fox" or in salvadorean words "vivian" but it is character that isn't slouch because he is a cunning too since he manipulates the rest of the characters for his own gain and at the end all are punished for the court.
Teacher i don't undrstand what exactly you want in your question but I found this referent to the question why it happened i 24 hours "The classical unities or three unities are rules for drama derived from a passage in Aristotle's Poetics. In their neoclassical form they are as follows:
The unity of action: a play should have one main action that it follows, with no or few subplots. The unity of place: a play should cover a single physical space and should not attempt to compress geography, nor should the stage represent more than one place. The unity of time: the action in a play should take place over no more than 24 hours."
in technical terms, sitcom = situational comedy. I brought up 24 to see if you could made the relation that everything happens in 24 hours... or like in Volpone...
1. Who is this guy?
ReplyDeleteJohn Donne (1572-1631), a jacobean poet and the most important mataphisical poet of the 17 century.
He wrote two anti-chatolic documents which are: Pseudo-Martyr (1610) and Ignatius his Conclave (1611).
