Thomas Hobbes in his book "Leviathan" Tried to separate two important elements o the society, which are:the politic and religion.
ReplyDeleteThose two elements were closely related during medieval age (I think that were the same)but Hobbes tried to separetedin order to recognized a politic state "Autonomo" but that this politic state recognize the kigdome of God in earth (as a religion, not as a politic power)
ReplyDeleteIn leviathan Hobbes state that the people should recognize or transfer all the power or sovereignty into a single monarch. After do that they have no right to rebel against him.
ReplyDeleteThat is recogniz as: Hobbes's theory of absolute sovereignty.
Hobbes used the biblical monster:eviathan in his book as a metaphore. Using that name hobbes what to tell to the others that that single figure will have the power, as in the bible the moster leviathat had it.
The book was writen during the english civil war and it is divided into four parts:
ReplyDelete1: Of Man
2: Of Common-wealth
3: Of a Christian Common-wealth
4: Of the Kingdom of Darkness
Leviathan was written by Thomas Hobbes and was published in 1651. The main issue is power, when it controlled by a single person (Oligarchy) and no one else has the right to complain or try to change the way things are. It narrates the story of a walled city where its citizens have no right protest against the emperor's commands. On the cover we can see the upper half of a man who holds a sword and a bishop's crosier, demonstrating that he is the only one who holds ecclesiastical and civil power.
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes developed in Leviathan a theory of absolute sovereignty where it is supposed the residents of the nation give all their power and right to a sovereign, once they have transferred all their power to the sovereign, this will be the one in charge to incorporate himself and act for them all. Something very interesting is that after people have transferred their power whether a king or some other ruling entity, and then they want to incorporate themselves within him, they have no right to protest against the authority. In general, the book is about human nature and the way how society is organized.
ReplyDeleteLeviathan is a book written by Thomas Hobbes and published in 1651; and it was written during the England civil war. However, Thomas Hobbes was against the royalty, and actually that was the reason of his exile, just because monarchs and royalty felt offended with Thomas’s work (leviathan).
ReplyDeleteSir Bacon was a was an english philosopher, scientist, jurist, stateman and author. He function as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England. What really gets my attention about him is his philosophy, he didn't really have a philosophy but rather a method to develop philosophy. He claimed that in order to find a philosophy a person had to clear the mind from distraction, flase notions or idols. The idols could be:
ReplyDelete"Idols of the Tribe" which are common to the race;
"Idols of the Den" which are peculiar to the individual;
"Idols of the Marketplace" coming from the misuse of language; and
"Idols of the Theatre" which result from an abuse of authority.
Sir Bacon's works include:
ReplyDelete■Two substantial volumes of history and biography, The History of the Reign of King Henry the Seventh and The History of the Reign of King Henry the Eighth.
■De Augmentis Scientiarum (an expanded Latin version of his earlier Advancement of Learning).
■The final 1625 edition of his Essayes, or Counsels.
■The remarkable Sylva Sylvarum, or A Natural History in Ten Centuries (a curious hodge-podge of scientific experiments, personal observations, speculations, ancient teachings, and analytical discussions on topics ranging from the causes of hiccups to explanations for the shortage of rain in Egypt). Artificially divided into ten “centuries” (that is, ten chapters, each consisting of one hundred items), the work was apparently intended to be included in Part Three of the Magna Instauratio.
■His utopian science-fiction novel The New Atlantis, which was published in unfinished form a year after his death.
■Various parts of his unfinished magnum opus Magna Instauratio (or Great Instauration), including a “Natural History of Winds” and a “Natural History of Life and Death.”
Leviathan was written by Thomas Hobbes. The central topic is "total power" and it is well represented in the tittle page of the book.
ReplyDeleteAs I wrote in the previous post, Leviathan book was written by Tommas Hobbes in 1651. The central topic is the man. Hobbes wanted to define the man and his roll in society.
ReplyDeleteThe book is divided in four parts: the first part is dedicated to men, the second part to commonwealth, the third part to the christian commonwelth, and the last part to the kingdom of darkness.
Leviathan is another book that points the bad aspects of the church as institution. It also refers to politics as one of the worst problems in society.
ReplyDeleteAfter the spread of Hobbes' ideas expressed in "Leviathan", all his works were banned so that anybody could read them until he died.
ReplyDeleteLeviathan was written by Thomas Hobbes. This book adresses the origin of society: how society must be organized, humans rigths, kind of goverments that a society should have in order to establish an iqual balance and also it marks a crucial point in what polital topics referred.
ReplyDeleteBy the time Leviathan appeared, it caused a revoultion because this book represented a hard critical about political between monarchical and parliamentary.
In Leviathan, is stated The State of Nature, which means that each person would have the rigth to do everything in this world, in others words, life would be easier without taking into account what others consider rigth or wrong.
ReplyDeleteWell, since The Leviathan was written during the English Civil War,it had a strong conection with the necesity of applying a central authority to avoid civil war. Even though, trying to get one only power at that time sounded like almost imposible. The religious side would not give up to the king's power, which was the political side.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that Hobbes denied incorporeal entities, so, in a way it was like saying god did not exist, maybe that is the reason why he was killed. becasue he was going against the points of view of the church.
ReplyDeleteLeviathan the book is based in the biblic monster leviathan (Isaiah 27:1.) It is said that this book justifies his filosophy of the exitence of the authoritarism.
ReplyDeleteThe book has 4 parts: of man, of common-wealth, of a chistian common-wealth and of the kingdom of darkness.
Leviathan was written by a British man named Thomas Hobbes in 1651. According to Hobbes, the state of nature is the war and the constant and selfish struggle of all against all. This kind of situation cannot persist forever, that´s why it is necessary that every individual transfers their power to one person who will be in charge to govern them. The aim of this is to secure society stability as well as end with the constant struggles.
ReplyDeleteIn Leviathan book, the institution of Church was criticized by Hobbes in order to bring to light the crimes that the same church commited in name of God.
ReplyDeleteSir Francis Bacon or Lord Verulam was one of the most intellectual man in the 15th and 16th centuries.
ReplyDeleteThe man had domain in several fields like laws, Science and Philosophy; For that reason, he superimposed the knowledge and empiricism over appearances that religions preached.
LEVIATHAN. Is a book which is the most known book by the English Political Philosopher Thomas Hobben. The title of this book refers a sea beast of the Old Testament, often associated with Satan, created by God called Leviathan. This book was divided in four parts. First, the Man, second State, third Christian State and four The kingdom of darkness.
ReplyDeleteAlso, in this great book Hobben established his doctrine like a right as the bases of a society and the legitimate government.
Leviathan was written by Thomas Hobbes in 1651. also, the political argument of Leviathan and the philosophical method employed by Hobbes to express his ideas scandalized many of his contemporaries, so his work created a controversy.
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes divided Leviathan in four parts:
ReplyDelete1. Of man
2. Of Common-wealth
3. Of a Christian Common-wealth
4. Of the Kingdom of Darkness
When I looked Levhiathan images I found exactly what i had imagined, big monsters in the ocean. Also i remembered the huge submarine called Nautilus this was submarine with the shape of a huge fish that appered in the Julio Verne famous book "Twenty Thousend Leagues Under the sea." But when I read about the book writed by Thomas Hobbes it was another thing.
ReplyDeleteLeviathan was a book about religious and civil power, it was written by Thomas Hobbes, he proposed the theory of absolutism, what means giving the power to just one person (a king, or a queen)Hobbes wrote his book during the English civil war.
ReplyDeleteIn Levhiathan by Hobbes he wants that have a balance between the two big powers of the age that were the monarchists and parliamentaries and wrote this book. Also he was considerated like atheist for his strong opinion about the church in leviathan book and for that reason some of his works were burn.
ReplyDeleteTalking about Lord Verulam; I found that Sir Bacon was in jail during a short period of time but as a result, he lost the favor of the king.
ReplyDeletehe was accused of bribery and prevarication.
Talking about Paradise Lost; according to the cover of the book, it says it's a poem. For me, is more a tale becuase it does not have rhyme and is very long.
ReplyDeleteThe poem is divided in 20 books and the major characters are Satan, God, Adan, and Eva.
The plot of Paradise lost is based in the biblical book called Genesis (which is the first book of the bible and relates how God created the man)but Jonh Milton adapted the story to bring up the issue of why God being so migthy allows that human beings suffer when we supposedly are his sons.
ReplyDeleteFrancis Bacon is also known as Lord Verulam and the Viscount St. Albans. His works focused in three areas: political, literary and philosophical. Among his best works are found “The Advance of Learning” and “The New Organon”. In “The New Organon”, Bacon gives an incomplete exposition about the inductive method which emphasizes that truth can only be reached through experience and the inductive reasoning.
ReplyDeleteNow on Bacon... what are your thoughts on the following quote " To write with powerful effect, he must write out the life he has led, as did Bacon when he wrote Shakespeare." Mark Twain
ReplyDeleteFrancis Bacon was a visionary philosopher ans scientist man because he propoused that people and their enviroment should be studied using the observation and prove that observation. He explain that the empirism should be omited.
ReplyDeleteNow that is know as "Baconian method" or "scientific method."
ReplyDeleteHe state an important link between the literarute and science, because Francis Bacon besides been a scientis, he was a prominet philosopher and writer.New atlantis was his most important litarary work.
In New Atlantis (Nova Atlantis)Bacon describe an utopical place were the people uses the new method (Scientific method.)
ReplyDeleteSo, we can infer that he tried that the people stop to believe in things based in the empirism.
" To write with powerful effect, he must write out the life he has led, as did Bacon when he wrote Shakespeare." Mark Twain
ReplyDeleteWow, pretty interesting. To begin I think that Twain wrote that because the theory or myth that state that Bacon wrote the works that were atrubuided to Shakespeare.
Now, my thoughts about the quote.
ReplyDeleteI can say that it means that bacon was capable to write in differents ways or styles (adapt his handwriting and words)in that way the pèople could not recognize that certain works had been writen by him.
Mark Twain wanted to state the Bacon`s versatility at the time of writing.
ReplyDeleteMark Twain wrote that quote about Shakespeare because he thought that the real author of some of Shakespeare's works was Bacon. He thought that Shakespeare was not the kind of person who could express feelings easily and that he was more interested in law than in literature.
ReplyDeleteSir Francis Bacon is known as Lord Verulam, and was the Viscount St. Alban's. Bacon's intelect was one of the most powerful at that time and his thought revolucionised the thought of human race by the phylosophers.
ReplyDeleteAbout the quote there is a book written by Virginia M. fellow "The Sakespiare Code" that sais tha some of Sakespiare works were written by Bacon based in this quote.
ReplyDeletethere are some people agree with this theory but there are many others that claim that Bacon was a dull and boring fellow, and that he was more interested in laws.
Bacon's most successful and prominant idea was to acclaim that things only occure for an explicable reason, discarding the empiricism. He clearly rejected every little thing that could not be ascertainable by the science.
ReplyDelete" To write with powerful effect, he must write out the life he has led, as did Bacon when he wrote Shakespeare."
ReplyDeleteThe Shakespeare's works have been refuted, for considering not of his autorship. Some people agree with the idea that skakespeare didn't have the capacity to write in that way, just because it doesn't match with his style.
Sir Francis Bacon was also known as Lord Verulam and the Viscount St. Albans. He was an intellectual reformer, philosopher, and winner of modern science. It is surprising to know that two of his best philosophical works are “The Proficience and Advancement of Learning” and “New Organon.” The first one begins with the idea that there are clear obstacles to diseases of learning that must be avoided before further progress is possible. In the second book, he explains a technique where he came to favor to the true spirit of scientific experiment and critical inquiry. He proposed a new system whose the main goal was the production of practical knowledge for the use and benefit of men and the relief of the human condition.
ReplyDeleteWhat a controversial question..
ReplyDeleteWell, what I think about this quote is based on what I read in the link we have studied about Bacon’s life and works where it is said that there are some fanatical claims of Shakespeare’s admirers who state that Bacon wrote the works traditionally attributed to William Shakespeare. I don’t understand why Mark Twain wrote that, because in my opinion, I consider that Bacon showed through his career (lawyer, statesman, essayist, historian, intellectual reformer, philosopher, and champion of modern science.) that he was capable to write his own works.
The first thing that comes to my mind when I read that quote is that Bacon included in any of his works one that he titled “Shakespeare” . I thought that although the work was titled “Shakespeare”, the content was not about him but Bacon´s life. I imagined that Bacon used that title to hide his identity and write probably his thoughts about controversy topics. In this way his image was not affected and he could write with freedom things that he couldn´t write with his own identity. It is my personal opinion…
ReplyDeleteFrancis Bacon and his succesful political carrer were very impresive. Bacon scale the ladder of power and influence really fast with the arrival of James to the throne. However, his succes lasted just for a short period of time. Francis carrer plummeted when he was arrested and charged with brybery in 1621. This happening lowered Bacon's reputation, so he was never allowed to sit in parliament again. Thus, he had more time to spend in the reform of learning.
ReplyDeleteThis is my opinion about the quote..." To write with powerful effect, he must write out the life he has led, as did Bacon when he wrote Shakespeare." Mark Twain - Well , there is a theory wich claims that Bacon wrote some papers using the pseudonym of shakespeare. The quote says "To write with powerful effect" probably refers to Bacon writing and pointing out the things that were wrong in his society, all this in a free way, so he may have done this way to avoid been killed by the ones who felt ofended by his papers.

ReplyDeleteBacon was a public servant and a stateman, but he also was a philosopher. About the quoted, there were some poeple, included Twain, who sustained that Shakespeare plays were not writen by him but Bacon. On the other hand, there were some others that thought that Bacon's personality was too cold too write plays like Shakespeare's.
ReplyDeleteSir Thomas Bacon was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, lawyer, jurist and author. So Thomas Bacom was a very intelligent man because of his work in politics and also literary works.
ReplyDeleteI think that Bacon must have been a well prepared man due to his ability to change writing styles in different works. He wrote about different topics in verse and prose using a variation of vocabulary and presentation.
ReplyDeleteI think that "Writing with powerful effect" means that his ideas about society were listened and accepted by the audience.
Bacon was a famous painter with homosexual inclinations why he was exiled from his home. Bacon was an English philosopher and politician.
ReplyDeleteBACON. During his childhood was a sickly child that makes it difficult to go to school as normal student, later became Chancellor of England in 1577 was added to the British Embassy in France, was responsible for some delicate diplomatic commissions
ReplyDeleteFrancis Bacon was a counselor, statesman, and lawyer to the king James I, early scientist and man of letters. Early in his career, Bacon's patron was the Earl of Essex.
ReplyDelete" To write with powerful effect, he must write out the life he has led, as did Bacon when he wrote Shakespeare." Mark Twain
ReplyDeleteIn my humble opinion, Sir Bacon was a wise man, so he had the capacity to create his extraordinay works.
In other words, Sir Bacon was advanced for his time because not all the people had the capacity to get involved in the field he dominated like science, writing.

ReplyDeleteWell, it seems that Milton went through the risk of defying the monarchy when he wrote Paradise lost. And thats why he said, he did not participate in the dangers of war, but at the same time he engaged in the service of no less dangerous matters to himself.
ReplyDeleteParadise lost is an epic poem written by John Milton, The first publication appeared in 1667 with 10 books and the second one in 1674 with 12 books. It is about a Christian story that is narrated in the Bible in the book of Genesis. That is the fall of men. In that story Adam and Eve are tempted by Satan, they fall in Satan´s trap and as a consequence of their disobedience they are expulsed from the Garden of Eden. The main issues that Paradise Lost deals with are: evil and suffering.
ReplyDeleteParadise Lost is an epic poem which is divided in ten books, Paradise Lost concerns the christian history of fall of man and Adam And Eva's temptatiom; there is when satan appear as an angel tryinying to convince eva since he got it, but with that accion he got the expulsion from the Garden of Eden.Paradise Lost also concern about idolatry (thge practice of constructing temples and other buildings to serve as worship).
ReplyDeleteParadise Lost is an epic poem made up twelve books written by John Milton in the 17th-century. This poem is based on Genesis story. In others words, it is related to the Fall of Man and the temptations of Adam and Eve by Satan. Furthermore, it is talks about their expulsion from the Garden of Eden.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteAt the beginning the books were 10, but later Milton divided some of those books, resulting in 12 at the end. As I wrote before, Milton went through great danger after publishing his book. However, influential friends kept him safe.
ReplyDeleteJohn Milton, for my a genius writer, why? because in his book "paradise lost" he represents heaven and hell as a metal state and not as the religion(church)explain to the people, as a place where your soul will stay after you die.
ReplyDeleteThe book is divided in twelve books, in whichs Milton narrates something similar to the genesis, how Adan and Eve where temptated and where expulsed form heaven and damned to suffer during the eternity
ReplyDeleteAlso, paradise lost let us know two parallel stories, first the fall of heaven of the devil and second the fall of Adan and Eve of the garden of eden.
ReplyDeleteThere is a part that I liked about the poem: "Long after known in Palestine" ---- Probably Milton was refering to the wrongly named in medieval times as "Sarracenos" and they were the source of the devil, since their religion was not accepted.
ReplyDeleteThere is something else, Milton proves that a poem does not need rhyme to catch ones attention. Even though the poem has been written in blank verse, the greatness of how words have been used is such that keeps your interest on the reading farther and farther. The way in which Milton developed his writing is just outstanding.
It's interesting to see how Milton and other writers used stories from The Bible to catch people's attention. I think that Milton used this story to show his own point of view of some concepts like "Heaven" and "Hell".
ReplyDeleteAcording to Milto's point of view heaven and hell are not physical things, they are mere states of mind.
ReplyDeleteMilton's Paradise lost was published in 1667 in 10 books, but in the version of 1674, it was divided in 12 books.
ReplyDeleteParadise lost is a poem based on Genesis, the first book of the bible. The poem is about the Fall of Man through satan's temptation in the way of a serpent and their expulsion from the Paradise because of their disobedience.
And now people don't write to criticize religion to avoid "hurting" the sensibility of others. Milton and his buddies were not afraid to confront the system of their times...
ReplyDeleteReading the argument of book 3 I found God's acceptance of the greatest sacrifice for Mankind's offence, his own Son as satisfaction of divine justice.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like Milton was writing about the redemption of mankind.
Also, Milton incorporated many different issues like paganism, chistianity, marriage, politics, fate, predestination and the trinity.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the book is so famouse because Milton knew how to mix all thise topics to form an excellent story.
Paradise Lost is about Adam and Eve. Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. Submitted by anonymous. Also how they were created and how they lost their places in the Garden of Eden. the Paradise Lost is like the same history as the one that you find in he Bible in Genesis but was expanded by Milton into a very long, detailed, narrative poem.
ReplyDeleteIt also includes the story of the origin of Satan. As he was called Lucifer, an angel in heaven who led his followers in a war against God, and was ultimately sent with them to hell. Thirst for revenge led him to cause man's downfall by turning into a serpent and tempting.
The epic poem "Paradise Lost", is one of the most famous works of Jhon Milton. It is a poem composed of twelve books in which the principal idea concerns the christian story of the fall of men. Furthermore it incorporates very controversial topic to attract people's attention, but in general it deals with topics like marriage, idolatry, criticizes, and so forth. For being a poem I consider that is too long, however the history of the poem encouraged people to reed it.
ReplyDeleteJohn Milton was an English poet, author, polemicist and civil servant for the Commonwealth of England; he was the author of Paradise Lost in 1667 and the poem it divided in 12 books.
ReplyDeleteMilton was not afraid to confront the the religion of the system of his time because he believed that it was not fair to be obligated to follow a religion, so everyone in theory was the right to have its own faith.
ReplyDeleteWell for me John Milton was very intelligent man because he knew how to criticize as the monarchy as the church through his works in a very creative way like are his poems.I think that may be he felt afraid in that time to do his criticizes but if he wasn't one of these people that say what they think about is reality anybody would have done.
ReplyDeletemost writers sometimes do not write their own experiences, but when they do the hystories are very good that sometimes we feel almost someting the same that happen to us. well as in Shakespeare Bacon did a story based on an good experience based on the church's thought.
ReplyDelete
