  12. It's interesting to see how the "Digestible" makes reference of some information from The Bible. I think I wouldn't have understood the idea without it.

  15. The writer makes good coments about women like:
"And certainly, as sooth as God is kig. to take a wif, it is a glorious thing." But at the same time he is criticizing two women that he calls: May and Januarye.

  16. Sorry, it is: as sooth as God is king.

  17. The Canterbury Tales is one of the most important works of English Literature and one of the reasons why Geoffrey Chaucer was identified as the first English poet. I have been reading some parts of the stories, but it is kind of difficult to understand. Thanks God there is a Glossary which helps the reader to understand a little bit more. It is interesting to know how thirty people from different social contexts were traveling as pilgrims to Canterbury because they wanted to worship the relics of Saint Thomas Becket. While they were traveling, they were telling stories in order to kill time.
The Merchant’s Tale really called my attention. In that story, the merchant recognizes that the marriage is very important. The Merchant used these beautiful words to describe what a wife was for him and what a man should have done in order to have one:
A wif is Goddes yifte verraily
A wif wol laste and in thyn hous endure
Wel lenger than thee list,_ paraventure.

Mariage is a ful greet sacrament.
He which that hath no wif I holde him shent.
He liveth helplees and al desolat—

Thanken his God that him hath sent a wif,
Or elles praye to God him for to sende
A wif to laste unto his lives ende.

The merchant used the Bible as an example to reaffirm the importance of the marriage, but at the end, the merchant criticized May and January. As far as I understood it was because of unfaithfulness.

  18. Well... It is the first time that I read such as interesting tale. In my opinion this is out of the ordinary (´cuz I have read the common tales, I mean with happy endings). It mentions some important values that should take into account in the matrimony. It points out that to have a wife is a blessed of God and a help for the man. This tale really got my attention ´cuz I have never read a story where different points of the Bible were commented.

  19. The knight's tale sounds interesting. I dunno, it sounds more like a political brawl. But The Merchant's tale has it good things, too.

  20. Well... such as interesting or amazing tale it's not, at least for me Because first, I don't understand very well the context in which it takes place, second, the text it's too confused even with the glosary. However what I found interesting and kind of weird is the fact that he is obsessed with marriage because it mentions contantly, and with the idea to get a young woman. An old wife it's discardes completly.

  21. Canterbury tales let us know how the people's lives at that time was. What caught my attention was the attitude of the prioress, the monk and the friar, I was amazed on these three characters behavior. and the way Chaucer makes them look.
The friar behavior makes think about contemporary situationes happening at catholic church in many countries. However, belonging to a Saint Francis church it makes feel proud when I testify the hard work modern friars are doing in ES for social justice.

  22. Hey thanks to Canterbury Tales I have noticed how English has changed because most of the words used in that tales are quite strange and for me was hard to understand the text.

  23. One thing that I particularly find pretty interesting in these tales was that they are a picture of the people who lived at that age. It was news to me at the beginning when I began to read them. But, knowing that they reflect a reality represented by people from different classes,I find them more attractive to read.

  24. personal opinion: It is quite of amazing how englsih have been changing through the centuries, the clearly evidence of that is the way to write and pronounce it comparing the old with the modern english.

  25. Now, talking about the canterbury tales, it calls my attention how the writer or author use the jokes like in miller´s tale, also how the two first tales are related in some way.
Another point taht calls my attention is how the author did not focused in the travel, the central point are the tales related for the twenty-nine pilgrims.

  26. Obviously, the people in the poem had to represent those from the time of chaucer since the characters and the places were the representation of the writer's reality, and even the stories told by the pilgrims were a piece of the writer's life and knowledge.
Indeed, the characters are quiet interesting becasue they emblematize the gap between the different social statuses at that time, and the way people were divided depending on the kind of job and the ranks held inside those "jobs".

  27. when I started to read it it was really confusing but as I continued it was really interesting, the words that they use are no longer that common but it gives to the stories a sense of uniqueness.

  28. Wow!! what a confusing language was the English in those times. For me it has been really hard to understand it; even though I used the MED.
The most interesting thing I found was the relation between pronunciation and writing; they uttered a word as well as the wrote it; but, if we see nowadays, English uttering has different writing.

  29. I agree with you, oscar. But that is why it "was" middle English, it would require some time for us to get used to the vocabulary and everything, that's the reason for me to be admired of the pople who translated it to modern English. But basically is just another language, an ancient one. That would be the only problem with learning it, there is no people speaking it or even writing it anymore, so is kind of useless. Even though is a great resource to get to know the past.

  30. What I like about the Canterbury Tales is the way Chaufer deals with religious issues that were forbideen during his time, such as selling "pardon" for one's sins. He actually presents the true personality of the people who claimed to be "Men of God" such as the Friar and the Pardoner. I like how Chaufer speaks his mind through his work.

  33. Chaufer also mocks the people who think that because they´ve got money they're perfect. It is shown in the way he writes the tale for the Wife of Bath. besides mentioning her moral mistakes he also mentions some physical flaws this lady has "Gaped teeth". I think that's a way of showing how her physical appereace reflects her inner "appereace" or personality.

  34. before this week I didn´t know how different middle english was, I had to use the glossary many times to understand the tales but I have to say that I don´t regret the effort, the tales were excellent.

  35. I found something interesting,in the tales they mentioned many greek and roman gods like pluto and diana. I thought that at that time those topics were taboo or something like that.

  38. I'm so impressed about the stories, I think it is really interesting to know the creativity people of the past had.

  39. Well in my opinion this task was a little hard to understand too but at the end the tales call me attention and i think that later i´m going to read slowly the whole masterpice of Mr.Chaucer because it seem very interesting the way how he describe and compare the people with the nature and enrich the literature.
I also I researched in the web and i found how he was inspaired in El Decameron by Boccaccio for later he write his tales.

  40. Another thing that call my attention was the way how the English have been changing through the time like other languages as the spanish. This English has several different words and sounds that change in our present time.(Thanks God it isn´t the English that we are learning!)because it is very extrange.
